Physicians commonly prescribe heart monitors for their patients who have symptoms such as palpitations (racing or fluttering heartbeats), dizziness, or syncope (fainting) that may be related to an arrhythmia (abnormal heart beat). These types of devices are called ambulatory cardiac monitors. During the testing period, patients wear these devices during their normal activities for a set period of time. The results are sent to the physician to help them in diagnosing whether or not the symptoms are related to the heart.
Continuously wearing the device is key to helping physicians understand if there is a problem. However, patients sometimes have difficulty wearing old style ambulatory cardiac monitors for the prescribed amount of time. Many devices can be bulky, require battery changes, or have several complex parts. The Zio™ family of products and services are different because they were designed with the patient in mind. The devices are small and lightweight- making it easy for patients to wear. Because of its thin profile, the device is usually inconspicuous under clothing.
To support the patient during the monitoring period, the highly-trained staff at the iRhythm National Clinical Center (iNCC) is available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, so patients always have a friendly, knowledgeable person to talk to. The iNCC is the link between the patient and their physician during the testing period. iRhythm is dedicated to serving patients and making the monitoring experience as simple as possible.
